Description
A visual depiction of how many times in my life I move against the current, honestly speaking, and asking honesty out of those around me. Painted in 2013 after making the decision that I could no longer work and teach for the City of Columbus Department of Recreation and Parks because of corruption and lies that directly impacted the studio where I taught. The city plan was to remove a huge expanse of glass block windows in a room with a high ceiling, and replace them all with concrete block. Why? They said "the windows were making the roof leak". An obvious lie. This is from the Director of Parks and Recreation, Alan McKnight. By appealing to Columbus City Council I saved most of the windows in my building and two other buildings. I also decided I could no longer work there. I loved and still love the many art students I worked with there for over 21 years. Thus... moving against the current. I could have remained mute like many others that worked in the building, allowing darkness to literally take over. But I am of the light. I shared the issue to the media, with my students and their parents of those that were children, with the public, and with the Columbus City Council. I witnessed corruption in how the bidding for construction was done, I fought it all. I saved many of the windows. Then I left. Leaving was hard, but in my battle for windows and the truth, I was treated very badly by city employees, especially by the Carriage Place Recreation Center Director, Kelly Hoffman. All I asked was for the truth! Lots more to this story, and another painting about it too. Seems I often make waves when dishonesty is present. Many of us have moved against the current! My favorite people are the activists who do this for the greater good of all. This image is part of the full painting.
